Durham Police Department Crisis Intervention Team

Information provided by: Durham System of Care

The Crisis Intervention Team of officers has training in mental illness and crisis intervention techniques designed to keep people with serious mental illness out of the criminal justice system for misdemeanor charges and give arresting officers more options when dealing with persons with mental illness. Excellent service for the community. Mental illness is still a stigma in our society today. Many families struggle to get a loved one help. It is heartbreaking. Durham CIT trained police officers have helped in several occasions to get my adult child help & hospitalized with dignity, compassion, professionalism, and trust to handle in best safe way possible. For this I am thankful and believe more police funding is needed.
