The Division of Aging and Adult Services works to promote the independence and enhance the dignity of North Carolina's older adults, persons with disabilities and their families through a community based system of opportunities, services, benefits and protections. North Carolina Division of Aging and Adult Services offers Adult Protective Services, the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program and Elder Rights assistance. Long-Term Care Ombudsmen serve as advocates for residents in nursing homes and adult care homes (rest homes/assisted living) throughout North Carolina. Disabled adults or disabled emancipated minors in North Carolina who are reported to be abused, neglected, or exploited and in need of protective services are eligible to receive Adult Protective services without regard to income. NC Alzheimer's Support Program provides public support by delivering critical core services to individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders, their caregivers, and families; the goal is to help family caregivers provide quality care longer. The NC- ASP provides information and referrals, individualized assistance and training for caregivers through partnerships with the following local agencies. These agencies serve as state resources for dementia-specific programs and services. NC-ASP partner, Duke Aging Center Family Support Program [1-800-672-4213, www.dukefamilysupport.org] serves as a one-stop information center and crisis hotline for families caring for people with memory disorders; staff helps with coping strategies, decisions for care, and sets up participation in Alzheimer's and/or caregiver research; see website for more services and educational resources. NC-ASP partner, Alzheimer's Association's Eastern NC Chapter [400 Oberlin Rd, Suite 208, Raleigh, 832-3732, www.alznc.org] offers information and referrals through a 24-hour, toll-free helpline (1-800-228-8738); provides individualized information packets on dementia and care-related problems on request; helps caregivers through in-person, telephone, and/or email consultations, family counseling, support group meetings, workshops, and educational materials; has a library of materials on Alzheimer's and related disorders, plus a quarterly newsletter.
