Durham Literacy Center

Information provided by: Durham System of Care

The Durham Literacy Center is a community-based nonprofit that provides free educational services to adults and out-of-school youth in Durham County. ---Adult Literacy--- Each year, 100 to 150 adults ages 18 and older are matched with trained volunteer tutors or placed in small group classes taught by program staff. Each adult receives research-based instruction in reading and writing that is tailored to his or her specific needs as well as support in achieving other personal goals. We also provide GED® tutoring and classes for adult learners. ---English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)--- Each year, 300 adults ages 18 and older are placed in leveled small group English classes led by trained volunteer instructors. The classes cover speaking, listening, reading, and writing on real-world topics such as health, transportation, housing, employment, shopping, and education. ---Youth Achievement Program--- Durham Literacy Center’s Youth Achievement program provides intensive, individualized high school equivalency instruction to out-of-school young adults ages 16-24 in a safe, peaceful setting with structure and support. ---Computer Literacy Classes--- We offer computer literacy classes each semester. Each nine-week class focuses on basic computer skills, such as using a mouse, typing, creating a document, and using the Internet. We also provide one-on-one assistance to help meet specific computer literacy-related needs. ---High School Equivalency and Job/Life Skills Program in the Durham County Detention Facility--- Through a partnership with the Durham Sheriff's Office, individuals who are incarcerated can participate in Life Skills and Job-Readiness and/or high school equivalency classes provided by DLC staff. Our main objectives are to provide high quality instruction, instill hope, set goals, and reconnect these young people to the community. ---DLC-Threshold Reading and Math Class--- DLC instructor Elizabeth Tietgen teaches a reading and math class at the Threshold Clubhouse. The class covers a wide range of topics - e.g., GED preparation, creative writing, poetry, and basic math - for adult learners at many levels. (Threshold serves adults living with severe mental illness.)
