Alzheimer's Walk, market and Health Fair join forces

Appeal-Democrat (Marysville, CA) - 9/2/2014

Sept. 02--People looking for a healthy lifestyle can come together Saturday morning at the Yuba City Town Center and surrounding area as the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's and the annual Community Health Fair take place.

In addition, the Yuba City Certified Farmers Market is in full swing from 8 a.m.-noon.

The two health events joined forces when local Alzheimer's Assocation chairwoman Cherie Stephens saw the health fair last year while she was working at the farmers market.

"What a great way to partner, spread the word and combine community resources," Stephens said.

About 300 walkers took part in the Yuba-Sutter area's inaugural Alzheimer's Walk last year and raised about $25,000, she said.

This year's goal is about 600 walkers raising $32,000.

The 3-mile Alzheimer's Walk starts at 10 a.m., with registration at 8:30 a.m., at the Yuba City Town Square fountain at Plumas Boulevard and B Street.

Participants will walk west on B Street, go north on Gray Avenue, east to Forbes Avenue and south to Plumas before returning to the Town Square.

Stephens became involved with the Alzheimer's Association after she realized information about the disease and the association was not available in the local community.

She became involved with the association and in bringing the fundraising walk to the community.

"It makes you feel less helpless when you are more active," she said. Her mother-in-law was diagnosed with Alzheimer's years earlier.

While the walkers are traveling through downtown Yuba City, the Sutter Surgical Hospital-North Valley's annual Sidewalk Community Health Fair will have about 35 vendors associated with health care.

The health fair, in its fourth year, is from 8 a.m.-noon is at 455 Plumas Blvd., across from the farmers market.

Services, all free, include blood pressure and glucose checks and free flu shots for people 18 years and over, based on availability.

"Every year (the health fair) has been better and better," said fair co-chair Tami King, quality manager for Sutter Surgical Hospital. "It's a good place to get information on health care and health care services in the community."

More than 1,000 people visited the health fair last year, she said, with more than 2,000 expected this year because of the link with the Alzheimer's Walk.
