Transportation Safety

Things You Can Do

Auto Safety
• Don’t start the car until everyone has put on a seatbelt and each child is buckled in a car seat or booster seat.
• For more information on auto safety, call Auto Safety Hotline. Visit www.nhtsa.gov.
• For information for California drivers, visit www.dot.ca.gov.
• Keep your car insured. It’s the law. Call State Insurance Hotline or visit www.insurance.ca.gov.

Child Safety
• Never leave children alone in the car! A parked car can heat up quickly and children can die. Children can also play with the gears or brakes and cause the car to move out of control. Visit www.safekids.org.
• Always check your back seat before you get out of the car—so you won’t forget a sleeping child.
• Always lock car doors and trunks, even at home.
• Teach children not to play in or around cars.
• Don’t let children play in driveways, streets or parking lots. Don’t let young children play near a street.
• Keep car keys out of children’s reach and sight.

Tips for People with Disabilities
• If your child has a disability, or an injury like a broken leg, find out how to use a car seat correctly. Talk to your doctor or local Easter Seal Society. Call Disability Services.
• If you use paratransit, make sure they provide car seats for your children.
• Public transportation built after 1990 must be accessible by wheelchair. Call Americans with Disabilities.
• Cars, trucks and vans can often be adapted to meet the needs of people
with disabilities. Call AT Network. Visit www.nhtsa.gov or www.atnet.org.
